Consisting chiefly of personal correspondence, speeches, writings, newspaper clippings and other records documenting the professional career of Miss Estellene Paxton Walker as a librarian in S.C. In 1941 Walker became a civilian employee of the U.S. Army, charged with establishing a post library at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Much of the correspondence was written while she was with the Army and is concerned primarily with her administration of the post library and with her social activities, such as dances and other functions. This collection provides valuable insights into life in Columbia, S.C., during World War II. Papers include lettter, Mar. 1933, from John C. Walker to daughter "Jack," commenting on the Bank Holiday; letter, 24 Apr. 1947, re the appropriation for the Library Board and "Negro service"; letters, Mar. - May 1956, re passage of a censorship resolution by the S.C. General Assembly during its "Segregation Session" ; and letter, 19 May 1956, giving Walker's analysis of South Carolina. Also includes correspondence, c. 1943-1957, re job offers attempting to recruit Walker for various library positions throughout the country.

Estellene Paxton Walker (1911-1983) served as Post Librarian, 1941-1945, at Fort Jackson, S.C.; she also served as Director of the South Carolina Library Board, 1946-1969, and as Librarian at the South Carolina State Library (Columbia, S.C.), 1969-1979; as the daughter of a civil engineer, E.P.
